 Volunteer tutors - Essential Skills

Location: North Down Training Ltd
Opportunity to gain experience in the planning and delivery of essential skills in literacy and/or numeracy. To assist in providing support for young people working in a training and employment setting

 
Services & Support


North Down Training Ltd works with a wide range of employers who provide valuable experience for young people entering work.

Training advisors from North Down Training Ltd will support the training by:

• Agreeing a job description for the student;

• Providing information and advice on managing the training placement;

• Visiting the student at least once every three weeks;

• Assisting the student gain new skills;

• Assisting the student gain knowledge about the job;

• Reviewing the training placement with you and the student on a regular basis.

The following pages provide information on your company and will provide our staff with the assurance that the young person will receive quality training and support in your company. Employer Information: Health & Safety


1. Duties Under Health & Safety Law:

a) Employers are aware of their legal responsibilities for the health, safety and welfare of students during the period of the work placement.
b) Employers comply with thr various health and safety regulations relevant to their workplace.

2. Risk Assessment:

Employers have completed a suitable and sufficient risk assessment in relation to the work area that the student will work in, taking account of:

a) The inexperience, immaturity and lack of awareness of the students in the workplace.
b) The use of control measures to eliminate the risks identified in a risk assessment.
c) The training organisation has been informed of any significant risks to the health & safety of the student.

3. Prohibitions:

The student will not do anything prohibited by law, operate dangerous machinery, carry out manual handling tasks (identified as being a significant risk to the health & safety of the student), or be exposed to dangerous substances, radiation, extreme temperatures, noise or vibration that may endanger their health & safety.

4. Supervision/Training:

a) A competent person will be designated for the supervision of the student.
b) The student will be given a job description.
c) The student will be given appropriate instruction before and supervision while operating any tools or machinery.
d) The student will be given an induction to all aspects of health & safety including an awareness of the hazards in the workplace, fire, emergencies, first-aid, accident reporting and security arrangements.
e) The student will be provided with appropriate personal protective equipment.

5. Accident Procedures/First Aid:

a) North Down Training Ltd will be informed in the event of any accident resulting in inury to the student, injury to other staff or damage to property.
b) The student will have access to first-aid in the workplace.
c) The employer will record the accident in an accident book and report to the relevant health & safety authorities where appropriate.

6. Insurance:

a) The students are covered for the period of the work placement by the Employer's Liability and Public Liability insurance.
b) The employer will provide details of the Employers' and Public Liability insurance and provide a copy of their current insurance certificate for North Down Training Ltd.

7. Health:

The employer will take into account any information provided in relation to medical conditions, physical and learning disabilities so as not to create a hazard, either to the student or to other employees.
